I had always thought setting a target was such a complete waste of my life. It presented itself with expectations and I was not ready to disappoint myself again and again. I let the wind dictate my movements and my mood, my actions. But growing older, I realized I easily got bored of things I started with so much zeal. Consequentially, I moved on to the next one. The reason being, I had no expectations for the things I did so my emotions overrode my will anytime.
Anyway the actual purpose of a daily target is to get you to realize that you are making progress in whatever endeavour you have chosen to pursue. It is a kind of mental stimulant that excites the brain and tricks it into the realm of growth. As they say slow motion is better than no motion.
Without this little triggers of excitements you begin to feel stagnated and trapped. And then unhappiness sets in with you having anger issues. Before long stress rears it ugly head and then high blood pressure follows. Then you start beating your spouse and being a bad parent and bad role model to your kids. Maybe it won’t follow that bizarre trail but it definitely won’t be a happy ending.
By setting daily goals and targets, even the most boring of jobs and activities will become interesting to do. You’ll save your heart the stress and have a happy work life. Since you spend a major part of your life at work, a happy work life is an overall happy life. Your work life will constitute about 25% of a life expectancy of 70 years (at an 8-hour per day work rate).
So the message this morning is rather simple. Get a pen and a notebook and make a target for the next 24 hours of your life. Start with simple and achievable targets and work your up from there. You don’t have to achieve them all but an achievement rate of 70% will be a great way to keep up. Keep this going for as long as possible and then move to medium term goals and then subsequently long term goals.
Set targets that make you happy. Have a perfect blend of things you are passionate about and the other things you need to do that don’t give you the jitters. Then in no time you will see the magic effect it carries. As it is said don’t ignore the small things for the big things because as you get weary with age you’ll realize the small things were the big things.
And the Lord answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay. (Habakkuk 2:2-3 )
Now Pokemon Go and make that “boring” job you nag about a kickass job people will want to leave their jobs for.
