First of all April Fools Day to you. I must admit this caption is entirely misleading to you reading this right now mainly because you have a perverse mind but I won’t hold it against you nor judge you because it’s a generational thing of which I am an unwilling victim. At the end of this post I’m sure it all make the intended sense it was designed to make; which explains my absence from here for the past 4 weeks.
Too often the trend in our society is for people to be separated from each other, to be cut off from the great mass of humanity, and in doing so to be dehumanized a little bit more with each step.
Cars have taken us off the streets, where we used to meet and greet each other and stop to chat. Cubicles have taken away a bit of the humanity in working, as have factories and even computers to some extent. The television has planted us firmly in our living rooms, instead of out with other people. Even movie theaters, where many people get together, cut us off from true conversation because we’re staring at a big screen.
Subliminally seeds of individuality are unconsciously being planted; tendency of that individuality to have us focused on ourselves to the exclusion of our fellow human beings. The tendency towards selfishness rather than giving, on helping ourselves rather than helping our brothers and sisters in humanity.
It is logical if you kick back in defense that the world is not as it used to be. I mean things are getting harder, people are getting dangerous and living by your own means is barely enough. But the fight against individuality is not in the sense of making a big splash all at once.
The only reason why I am giving this cliché “make a change”speech is because I have seen the effect first hand. I partnered with some friends from PH Group to embark on a project. It started out as just a thought while two friends were having a night out eating pizza in some coded location then the idea for doing something cool which would affect lives of children while promoting the arts, was birthed.
It could have died there but for support of the initiative by the coolest people on earth… my friends. From there it was a matter of spreading the idea and in no time Miss Malaika joined to collaborate to embark on this project; a charity school painting project dubbed “COLOUR ME EDUCATED.”
The aim of the “COLOUR ME EDUCATED” initiative, is to make school look attractive again to those losing sight of the attractiveness in both its literal and figurative senses. The believe is that, the pen is mightier than the sword, so it is time we armed the defenseless with the pen to help chart a new course for development in the area of education, in our beloved country Ghana.
“The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn, change and create a change.”
We chose God’s Gift School in Jamestown to be the pilot project for this insightful initiative. So on Easter Saturday, 26th March 2016 we painted the school and classroom walls together with over 40 friends. We filled their walls with inspirational quotes and messages while we splattered paint on our clothes and hands with the hope that, at least one child will see the beauty we are so badly trying to recreate.
In the words of William Shakespeare, “How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world.” He wasn’t far from the reality that a little act of kindness goes a long way light up a dark and gloomy world. Now you may ask of what good is casting my candle’s light to this gloomy world?
The answer is simple it makes the world a better place. We didn’t build a new school, donate sacks of money, give scholarships, stop world hunger or avert World War 3, all of which would have been seen on the news and made us really cool and instant heroes. We simply painted some dirty walls of a small school in a poor community in Jamestown. On the surface it’s just paint but beneath it is deep; It is willingness, it is selflessness, it is service and the paragon and exact embodiment of SYNERGY.
The mere fact that we were willing to be vessels of an infinitesimal change is a sign that we can be used for a much bigger change in the nearest future. This drive will not die nor end with me, at least not now. And the comforting fact that I have the greatest “Friends with Benefits” in the world to support me at all times is a guarantee that together we have the Midas touch to turn gold whatever we touch.
So strike back against the selfishness and greed of our modern world, and get your hands dirty helping out a fellow human being today. Not next month, but today. Take just a few minutes this day, and do a kindness for another person. Now I’ve been caught getting dirty with paint to ensure at least one person gets a clean future from education. It can be something small, or the start of something big. Ask for support and put a smile on someone’s face like we have.
Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, it’s at the end of your arm, as you get older, remember you have another hand: The first is to help yourself, the second is to help others. (Audrey Hepburn)
